2005-06 Jussi Markkanen Set 3 / Playoffs Game Worn Home Jersey

*This jersey was tagged with the Cup Finals patch after the fact. The sweater had nothing to do with the Cup Finals.

Born on May 8, 1975, in Imatra, Finland, Jussi Markkanen was a 133rd overall draft pick of the Oilers in 2001. Coming out of the Finnish hockey system with the SaiPa Lappeenranta club, he made his NHL debut fast after being drafted. On November 29, 2001, he started in goal against the Anaheim Ducks and recorded a 2-0 shutout in his first career game. The expectations were high, and in that first season, he appeared in 14 regular season games, and earned six wins to go with two shutouts, and a 0.929% save average. The following season, his games went up, but his numbers went down with the exception of shutouts. He was then traded to the New York Rangers in the 2003 off-season in exchange for Brian Leetch and he played decently in 26 games for them before being reacquired by the Oilers in the deal that saw Petr Nedved enter his first stint with Edmonton. After the lockout, he returned to Edmonton in 2005-06 and entered a strange scenario. He and Ty Conklin were fighting for the starting role on the team before a Mike Morrison came in and established himself as a God in shootouts. Then at the trade deadline, Dwayne Roloson was acquired by the Oilers, making Mike Morrison expendable and then making for an interesting goaltending situation as Conklin and Markkanen fought to be the backup. Markkanen appeared in zero regular season games after Roloson was acquired but his heroics in the Stanley Cup Final are well remembered. With Roloson being injured in game one, Markkanen carried the Oilers to a seventh game against the Carolina Hurricanes, where they were ultimately defeated. After 2005-06, he played one additional year in the NHL, appearing in 22 games. He then went overseas to play in Europe, officially retiring from play at the conclusion of the 2017-18 season.

In his 128 game career, Markkanen recorded a 43-47-8-7 record with seven shutouts, a 2.70 GAA, and a 0.901% save average. He also appeared in seven playoff games, going 3-3 with one shutout, a 2.24GAA, and a 0.906% save average.

The piece we are looking at today is a 2005-06 Set 3 Regular Season / Playoff home sweater worn for ten games in the regular season from March 1 and then in eight games until the end of the conference finals series against Anaheim for a grand total of 18 games. Wearing this sweater, Markkanen played in a single game, on March 1, 2006. It was worn in a backup role multiple times. Wear is light with puck impacts, as well as some scratching and staining visible. A cool piece of an oft overlooked goaltender!
